Fishing
For the fisherman, Washburn is a great spot to access the Missouri River. Two ramps are available for launching your boat to begin a day of fishing on the river and at the end of the day take advantage of the fish cleaning station located in the Cenex parking lot. In June, there is an annual fishing derby sponsored by the Washburn Civic Club.

Hunting
The area surrounding Washburn offers an abundance of hunting opportunities. The land around the city is plentiful with many types of wildlife, including ducks, geese, and deer. Licenses for both upland game and waterfowl can be obtained at the same locations as fishing licenses. Golf
Painted Woods Golf Course is a lush, beautiful 9-hole golf course located three miles south of Washburn on Highway 83. Open from late April through early October, weather permitting, the challenging course is leisurely interrupted by Painted Woods creek at nearly every h
ole. The course's clubhouse, that sits high atop the course and the creek, contains a bar and grill which can be rented for birthday parties, wedding rehearsals and other special occasions. Tee times are first come. Call 701-462-8480 to inquire about cart and golfing fees or to reserve the clubhouse for a special event.

Canoeing and Kayaking
The Washburn Public Boat Ramp is a perfect place to put in your canoe or kayak on the Missouri River.

Winter Activities
When the winter season comes to Washburn it doesn't mean recreation has to end. Cross Ranch State Park, 10 miles from Washburn, offers cross-country skiing trails and snowmobiling continues to be a favorite winter sport in the fields around the city. Ice fishing on the Missouri River is also a popular pastime for fishermen.

City Parks
The Washburn Park Board maintains two major parks, Riverside and Pool Side, and several neighborhood parks throughout the city. Riverside Park is located along the Missouri River and features a paved walking trail, public boat ramp and dock, the historical Sioux Ferry, picnic shelters, fireplaces, a playground and a nine-hole Frisbee golf course. The park also offers a primitive camping area for both tents and campers. The Pool Side Park is adjacent to the Washburn public swimming pool in downtown Washburn and features brand-new playground equipment and a picnic shelter.
The Washburn Swimming Pool, located downtown adjacent to Poolside Park, is a retreat for all ages during the hot summer days. Open June through August, the large pool has a separate baby pool, two swimming areas, lap pool and two diving board. Swimming lessons and water aerobics are also offered. The pool lifeguards are certified by the Red Cross. The swimming pool is maintained by the Washburn Park Board and season tickets or one-day passes can be purchased right at the pool facilities or you can call 701-462-8255.
A new 2.2 mile walking trail that starts in downtown Washburn, runs along the Missouri River, through Riverside Park and on to the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center allows visitors and residents a place to walk, bike and enjoy the scenery and nature.

Frisbee Golf
A nine-hole Frisbee golf course is located at Riverside Park. The course begins east of the Sioux Ferry, goes over the old water tanks and ends near the upper level picnic area. There is no charge for the course.

Tennis
The Pro Turf Double Tennis Courts are located next to the high school. They are open to the public and there is no charge for using them. But if others are waiting to play please respect the one hour time limit.

Baseball, Softball & Soccer
All youth ball programs begin in early June and run through July. There are many different programs for boys and girls ages 5 - 17. Practice and game times vary according with the program but all take place at the diamond next to the water treatment plant. For more information call, 701-462-8255.
The youth soccer program is sponsored for elementary aged boys and girls in September and October. Both games and practices take place at the ball field next to the water treatment plant. Registration is announced in the Leader News in early fall.
