Washburn Public Library


The Washburn Public Library is a branch of the McLean-Mercer Regional Library system. The library keeps a selection of books, audio books, periodicals, videos, and reference materials and has a public use computer available for patrons to check e-mail and use the Internet. The library also participates in the Accelerated Reader Program, used by the Washburn School System, by keeping a large selection of books that are included on their reading list. If the library does not have a book that you would like, the book can be requested through other Regional branches (Infolynx) or from the North Dakota State Library (Odin).


The library provides a reading program each summer for any child who wishes to participate and also works with the McLean County Fair on their Read and Win program.

Washburn has a 2 fully-staffed clinic offering a wide range of care and referral services. The McLean County Public Nurse is also located in Washburn at the McLean County Courthouse. Washburn also has a chiropractic clinic, massage therapist, vision center, and a pharmacy and is supported by very active volunteer ambulance, fire, and rescue squads.


McLean County Public Health Nurse

The McLean County Public Health Nurse office is located at the County Courthouse and offers the following services:


  • Blood Pressure Screening, Footcare Clinics, Helmet & Bike Safety Courses, Immunizations, Nutrition Counseling, Pre-school Screenings, Well Child Clinic, WIC Office, Women's Health Programs

Washburn Family Clinic/Primecare

The Washburn Family Clinic PrimeCare works in affiliation with St. Alexius Medical Center in Bismarck and the PrimeCare Network. The clinic staffs a full-time family nurse practitioner and nursing staff. The clinic offers lab and x-ray services daily. Physical Therapy is available by appointment. Other services available at the clinic are Pulmonary Function Testing, weekly Ultra Sound and monthly Surgical and OB/GYN consultation and Bone Densinometry.

Washburn Chiropractic

Bringing chiropractic care to the region for more than 10 years, Dr. John Thompson offers conservative care for a multitude of acute and chronic conditions for all ages.


The Washburn Chiropractic Clinic is open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 9 am - 5 pm and walk-ins are welcome.

Washburn Emergency Medical Services


Washburn Ambulance Squad

The Washburn ambulance squad is a strong full volunteer staffed organization that serves Washburn and the immediate surrounding rural areas. Members are trained at vary different levels. If you want to join you can be a driver, basic EMT or an intermediate EMT. Registered nurses in Washburn are also part of the squad. There are many other volunteers that support the Ambulance squad, providing computer support, business and accounting support and purchasing and buying support. The Ambulance squad is well trained and efficient. They are also active in the community providing CPR training for others organizations.


If you wish to become a member, please call 701-462-8431. Your training fees for EMT basic and intermediate are covered by the organization. Monthly meetings are held the fourth Monday of each month at 7:30 p.m. at the ambulance bay across from City Hall and the Fire Hall.


Washburn Fire Department

The Washburn fire department is also a fully volunteer-staffed organization in Washburn, the Fire Department is a state-of-the art department with fully trained fire fighters, servicing Washburn and the rural Washburn school district areas.


Volunteers attend monthly training sessions, covering training topics such as truck and pump operations, CPR, water movement, ladders and hazardous material handling. Fire fighters must complete special driver's certification on each of the five automobiles. Meetings are held the last Thursday of each month.


The fire department receives its funding through mil levies from the city and the rural fire district and through personal donations. Each of the training session costs is covered by the fire department.

Washburn Rescue Squad

Formed in May 1999, the rescue squad is a 15-member team consisting of members from the ambulance and fire squad. The rescue squad has new Jaws of Life equipment and is specially trained in automobile extrication and farm equipment extrication. The minimum requirement to be part of the rescue squad requires 12 hours of CPR training and 40 hours of First Responder training.
