Economic Development

The Washburn Area Economic Development Association works with existing and new businesses in the Washburn area. Please contact our office for assistance with moving to Washburn, starting or moving a business to Washburn or new projects in the area.Call 701-462-3801 or email Milissa Price at washaud@westriv.com. Our office is located in the City Hall on Main Avenue in Washburn.

Washburn is located 36 miles north of Bismarck-Mandan, population 70,000. Bismarck is the second fastest growing city in North Dakota, much of that growth is occurring at the north end of the city, therefore putting the distance between Bismarck and Washburn even less. Bismarck is the home of both the University of Mary and Bismarck State College. The Bismarck Municipal Airport is located less than an hour away from Washburn. You will find it easy to travel in and out of our area.

Washburn is a growing community, situated at the energy center of the

state. Great River Energy and Headwaters Inc. are building an ethanol plant that will hire 30+ full time employees. These new employees will be bringing spouses to the area, making more people available for hire in your facility. Great River Energy and Headwaters Inc. are also considering a Flex-crete plant and coal to liquids facility. These two plants could hire up to 600 new employees in the area as well. Once again, families of these employees will join the available labor pool.

The community of Washburn is expanding to prepare for this growth. New apartment complexes, residential housing and an upscale golf course development will begin construction in the spring of 2006.

We have two medical facilities in Washburn that are affiliated with the two major medical centers in Bismarck, St. Alexius Health Systems and MedCenter One Care.

The Washburn Municipal Airport has a fully paved concrete runway that is 60 feet wide by 3700 feet long. The airport is lighted to provide 24 hour operation. There is 100 octane fuel available for sale on site. The runway was extended in 2006 to accommodate additional jet landings.

Sales Tax/Incentives

North Dakota is a great state to do business and the tax climate is competitive with any other in the nation. We will work with you on traditional incentives as well as innovative opportunities.

  • Our individual income tax rates are relatively low, ranging from 2.1 % to 5.54%.
  • Corporation income tax rates range from 2.6% to 7% of North Dakota taxable income. For taxable years beginning after December 31, 2006 the top rate will drop to 6.5%
  • Cost of doing business in North Dakota is lower because many items aren't taxed such as electricity, professional services and groceries.
  • North Dakota exempts all personal property from taxation (except certain oil and gas refineries and utilities).
  • As you are aware, the Commerce Department of the State of North Dakota offers or coordinates a variety of financing and other incentive packages.

Property Tax Rates

McLean County boasts among the very lowest property tax mill levies in the state, through prudent stewardship.
